Ship’s Stability and Grain Calculations
Emergencies occurring due to loss of stability of the vessel are among
the most severe in their consequences (the ship usually capsizes in a matter of
seconds and few or none of those people on board can survive). Therefore, it is
not surprising that international and national authorities responsible for the
safety of navigation and the safety of the construction and operation of ships
have adopted a number of documents regulating the requirements for the
stability of ships. Navigators must know and comply with these requirements
during the process of loading and unloading the ships, same as during the
voyage.
When transporting various specific types of cargo (grain bulk, timber, etc.), special requirements for stability are applied, as set out in the relevant International Codes. Particular attention is paid to the transportation of grain, since a huge number of maritime emergencies happened due to the loss of stability of ships carrying grain, as a result of cargo shifting.
